Biography In addition to over 35 years teaching experience, Doris Mattingly has an extensive background in accompanying, vocal coaching and conducting. Recently Chair of the Washington International Competition for Piano sponsored by the Friday Morning Music Club Foundation, Ms. Mattingly coordinated all aspects of this highly respected event presented at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Former Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Opera Theatre of Washington, she collaborated with the American University Opera Department to feature professional area artists in many special events, new music theater projects and commissioned works. Ms. Mattingly has performed in music centers and universities in the metropolitan area including the Kennedy Center, Lisner Auditorium, Warner Theater and Constitution Hall. Ms. Mattingly received her degrees in Piano Performance and Voice at Catholic University, where she studied with Emerson Meyers and George Manos, did graduate studies in Music Pedagogy at the University of Maryland, was awarded a scholarship to accompany at the Boris Goldovsky Institute and studied Voiceover and Narration at the John Burr Studios. For over a decade, she was Conductor and Organist at St. Thomas Apostle Church, Washington, D.C., and Temple Rodef Shalom, McLean, Virginia. She was also Conductor of the Friday Morning Music Club Womens Chorus, and performed as Assistant Conductor of the Washington Civic Opera and Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, where she narrated the annual Childrens Opera Series. She has lectured for the Arlington County Public Librarys Opera Series. Ms. Mattingly also developed and implemented the Opera Program at the Duke Ellington School and has taught high school music and music theater at the Field School in Washington, D.C., and recently served as Trustee for the Friday Morning Music Club Foundation, Inc. Ms. Mattingly holds professional affiliations with the Music Teachers National Association, the Maryland State Music Teachers Association and the Montgomery County Music Teachers Association where she serves as judge for area-wide piano competitions. Ms. Mattingly consults with public and private school educators to provide appropriate academic programs for students with special needs, and maintains a private piano, voice and coaching studio in Bethesda, Maryland.
