My philosphy of teaching is as follows:
"To demonstrate a love of music and a sincere desire to lay a musical foundation that will nurture students and enable them to be creative and enjoy the art of making music for the rest of their lives."
I have been teaching privately and with groups (Music for Young Children) for 22 years. Although I studied piano since the age of 4, I pursued a University degree in science, but after 8 years of working as a Kinesiologist the love of music drew me back! Over the following 12 years I began part time studies with Deb Buset researching Pedagogy and studying composers, style and interpretation while also completing an Associate with Conservatory Canada. Following my studies with Ms. Buset I continued with Berklee College of Music acquiring a certificate in Jazz Keyboard.
At present I am the First Vice President of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association. Schmidt Piano studio is my private business where I instruct 85-100 students weekly. The students receive a varied education in piano, acquiring solid technique, access to lots of repertoire (classical, modern, jazz), composing and improvising skills along with gaining theoretical knowledge. All students have plenty of performance opportunities through examinations, Festivals and recitals.
