Mary Lou Iverson is a highly regarded pianist and
piano pedagogue in Apple Valley, Minnesota. She
is a frequent performer both locally and in Mexico
at the Theatro de la Paz and Casa de la Cultura
in San Luis Potosi. As piano teacher she consistently
has students who are state piano competition winners
and has had a nationally recognized student composition
winner. Frequently, she is called upon to adjudicate
piano events such as state competition, ensemble
festival, and National Federation Festival. She
lectures frequently about Studio Management, Music
Theory, Technology and the Music Studio, and Students
with Disabilities. As writer for Keyboard Companion,
she described the process of website development
for an independent music studio; it was published
in Spring 1998.
She has published "Music History in the Making,"
a student organizer that provides goal setting and
positive reinforcement. She is one of three developers
of "Time Signature", Studio Management
Software.
She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music
and is a charter member and president of South Suburban
Music Teachers Association, Minnesota Music Teachers
Association affiliated with Music Teachers National
Association, and also American Federation of Music
Teachers. She serves as MMTA Technology Chairperson
since 1992.
Mary Lou began her piano study at a young age of
5 with her mother. Subsequent teachers have included
Thelma Willison and Dr. Norman Goodbrod at Grinnell
College Iowa; Kathryn Bacon from Julliard; Professor
Lyondecker of the Cathedral of Cologne in Germany;
Joanne Tierney at the College of St. Catherine in
St. Paul, MN and Kenneth Huber of Carleton and Augsburg
Colleges also in Minnesota.
Since Mary Lou is also a registered professional
nurse, she enrolls students who are medically challenged
and need special consideration. As a nurse, Mary
Lou has taught psychiatric nursing at Black Hawk
College, Illinois, was director of Home Health in
Mt. Carmel, Illinois, was certified as a coronary
care nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital
in Iowa City, Iowa and was Head Nurse of CCU in
Muscatine, Iowa. She was an Outreach Worker for
county mental health facilities in Illinois dealing
with substance abuse treatment.
Mary Lou has successfully combined the two parallel
careers, making the focus of music education and
performance goal directed and positive. Consistent
with ongoing education, she has attended many seminars
and workshops locally and nationally.
